If there was one stop you shouldn't have missed it was in La Chapelle St Mesmin the host of the first and second round of the European Bmx Championships.

The sun was out for the most part as well as the riders, 1280 to be exact, all came out to witness a technical yet power hungry track run by an efficient organization and wonderful club.

The first round of the Euros is where everyone comes to get a feel of things for the season to come. Lots of foreigners come from lands far and wide, not to play cards but to mix with the best riders in Europe and see how it might all end of at the finals in Cheddar, England come July.

Some riders who made the long trip came from Russia , but notably the rider from Hong Kong Steve Wong. Now it's just the beginning of BMX in Asia but what will it be like in 2008 with the Olympics in Beijing. The Canadian rider, Samantha Cools, came over as well after having ridden the weekend before in California and witnessed first hand the excellent level of Elite Women in Europe.

The track at La Chapelle is well known for big events having hosted most recently the French championships in 2004. It's located on the Loire River just outside of Orleans, France. For some this weekend seemed like a vacation, especially those from the North. The track offered the riders a challenge which in turn made it amusing for the spectators to watch. The second and last straights offered the biggest challenge with big jumps and steep rhythm sections. With so many riders the finals ran rather late and there was hardly enough light for the photo finish camera.

Certain riders left a strong impression:
In the boys 13/14 class Lorin Martinez literally to hold of the class and didn't let anyone through.
In the 15/16 class the world champ Jelle VAN GORKOM was untouchable he was so strong it was like watching an alien from another planet. A rider to be reckoned with in the future.
The new 17/24 class was taken over by two French riders who shared victories in cruiser and 20 inch, Nicolas Schmidt and Anthony Delaporte. Also the 30 and over 20 inch class this year will bring a lot of excitement with several world finalists and veteran elite riders. The race was won by Yann Bonnici followed closely by hometown rider Yann Cherbonnel and world champ Pierre-Henri Sauze.

On to the official categories of the weekend and some riders were especially on form, notably those that came from the French training center in Aix. The group is really coming together with two victories in the Elite Men's class, Thomas Hamon [CRUPI-USPROBIKES] on Saturday and Pablo Gutierrez on Sunday. An injured Thomas Allier didn't make it out of the semis and the French Champ Florent Boutte could only muster a second place finish. Watch out for the young guns this year. Laetitia LeCourguillé won the Elite Women's class hands down followed by Blandine Cottereau in second each day. The junior categories saw Moana MooCaille and Shanaze Reade out in front but only managed one win apiece in their respective class. In other news Arturs Matisons had a very impressive first straight but never managed to finish the race in the lead. If this guy gets his head together he's going to be one happy camper in July.

The level of racing here in Europe is only getting better but the atmosphere around the track left something to be desired. Maybe it was the first round, maybe it was the heat but hopefully the next stop in Germany will get everything right and make Europe the best place to race in the world. Until next time, we hope you like the photos and videos posted on the site.
